REMINDER TODAY: Penn State Law Center for Immigrants’ Rights Clinic and The State College Municipality Present Immigration and Equity Summit

State College, PA – On Monday, September 17, 2018, community leaders will gather to share their view on current immigration policies and the benefits of welcoming everyone into the community. This will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the second floor of the State College Municipal Building located at 243 South Allen Street and is open to the public. This will be followed by Mayor Don Hahn signing proclamations declaring September as Hispanic Heritage Month in State College and Welcoming Week in State College at 7:00 p.m. as part of the regularly scheduled Borough Council meeting.
Speakers during the Immigration and Equity Summit will include Professor Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia, Borough Manager Tom Fountaine, Mayor Don Hahn, Police Chief John Gardner, Vestonia Viddy and Penn State Law student Shanjida Chowdhury. Penn State Law students Melissa Blanco will be accepting a proclamation on behalf of the Latinx Law Student Association and Chase Crowley will be accepting a proclamation of behalf of the Center for Immigrants’ Rights Clinic.
These events are all a part of Welcoming Week that takes place September 14-23. Welcoming Week is a campaign created by the non-profit organization, Welcoming America. The organization supports and encourages inclusion of immigrants in communities to create a diverse environment and growth. Since launched in 2009, Welcoming America has sent a growing movement across the United States with one in eight Americans now living in a Welcoming Community.
In 2017 there were over 700 events across the country reaching from Maine, Alaska, Florida, California and many places in between. State College is now a part of Welcoming America which will create connections within the community and Welcomers everywhere. More information about this event can be found at
